The story of Expat Explore begins in 1997 with a young South African named Carl.

Carl had won a competition with a prize many travelers dream of: return flights and accommodation to anywhere in Europe. Unsure where to go at first, he spoke with friends and eventually settled on Paris — the City of Light, culture, and endless things to explore.

The South African Rand didn’t stretch too far in Europe, especially in Paris. By the final day of his trip, Carl faced a choice many budget travellers will recognise: he could afford either food for the day… or one last unforgettable experience — Disneyland Paris.

Disneyland won.

After an incredible day (and some kind Americans kindly buying him lunch), Carl returned home inspired, having learned a valuable lesson about travel: experiences matter more than comfort — and value matters.

After finishing university, Carl decided he wasn’t done with Europe. Like many young travelers, he based himself in London, the gateway to the continent. There, he naturally gravitated toward the South African expatriate community — the “Expats”.

One of those expats was Jakes, someone Carl had briefly known at university. Jakes was business-minded, adventurous, and also keen to explore Europe.

Together, they had an idea.

Jakes was already planning a business helping expatriates apply for Schengen visas, which required applicants to show a planned travel itinerary. To solve this problem, Carl and Jakes began running weekend group tours to Paris.

With limited resources, they used National Express buses, departing London on Friday afternoons, arriving in Paris early Saturday morning, exploring relentlessly all weekend, and returning to London by Monday morning — ready for another week of work.

It was intense.
But people loved it.
