A group tour is a travel experience where a set group of people explore a destination together, following a planned itinerary. These tours are organised through travel company and include transportation, accommodation, activities and a tour leader. Group tours are a great way to meet new people, enjoy stress free travel, and discover highlights of a destination without having to plan every detail yourself.

Not usually, most tours will include the accommodation, transport, some activities, as well as some meals. This gives you the freedom to explore on your own if you wish. If you’d like extra guidance or to participate in unique experiences you can sign up for optional excursions (at an extra cost). It’s important to check what’s included in each specific tour so you know exactly what to expect before you book.

Group tours offer a lot of advantages over traveling on your own. First, all the planning is taken care of — from transportation and accommodations to activities and sightseeing — so you can relax and simply enjoy the experience. You also gain the knowledge of a professional tour guide who can offer local insights you might miss on your own. Group tours often include exclusive experiences, skip-the-line access, and better rates thanks to group pricing. Plus, you’ll meet like-minded travelers, making it easy to share the journey and create new friendships along the way. For many, it’s a perfect balance of adventure, convenience, and connection.

Far from it. When you consider all the included elements of the tour—like transportation, accommodation, meals, and activities—it can often be cheaper than planning your own adventure. Plus, you won’t have the stress of arranging everything yourself. Overall, you’ll likely find that a group tour provides excellent value.

A Tour Leader manages an organised multi-day itinerary, and are also known as a Tour Director or Trip Manager depending on the tour company’s chosen jargon. A Tour Guide is someone who is an expert in a particular location and provides walking, driving or cycling tours in their area of expertise. Whilst on an organised tour you will usually have a Tour Leader who runs the bulk of the tour but will then work with Tour Guide’s at the various destinations. We often say in the industry that a Tour Leader knows a little about a lot of places whereas a Tour Guide knows a lot about one place.

I would say there is no best tour operator overall. It comes down to your needs, wants and budget and who will best cater for you. Are you 18-35yo? Τhen go on a Contiki. Looking for a more budget friendly tour? Join me at Expat Explore. Or do you value comfort? Then try Insight Vacations.
